Interface horizontal shear strength requirement in Ultra-thin whitetopping (UTW) pavement.

Abstract Ultra-thin whitetopping (UTW) is a thin (5-10 cm) layer of concrete overlaying over an existing asphalt pavement. This bonded on the surface. Although UTW has been successful in strengthening pavement, some cases, composite pavement may debond at interface under slab due to high shear stress. paper aims determine strength required for systems using theoretical methods and calibrated numerical models (FEMs). The study analysed 432 scenarios with different sizes, thicknesses, material properties. results show that higher stress occurs when modulus stiffer. size slab, supporting layer, thickness have only minor effect value. However, significantly affects maximum UTW, increase up 36.6% reducing from 100mm 50 mm. FEM calculations can be used horizontal UTW.
